Doug Henwood Talks » Blog Archive » Judge: Americans need background checks to date internationally
Looks like Washington DC is really protecting its citizens. On Mar 26, 2007, a new federal law that makes it a crime for Americans to communicate with foreigners on [tag-tec]dating websites[/tag-tec] without criminal background checks. Cool. Even the European Connections could not revoke it on grounds of violating the freedom of speech. So much for the liberty and freedom.Â
On the serious side, IMBRA makes it a felony for an internet dating company to introduce or allow any American to communicate with any person of foreign nationality without first subjecting that American to a criminal background check etc.
Interestingly, Match.com is excluded from this law because American women are supposedly not abused by American men that they meet on the internet, and thus are not in need of protection. What protection??

This law is as bad as it seems: the government has made it a crime to communicate with foreigners through dating sites.

I will agree. The government needs to really know the lines between protection and liberty.
Hey, we need a background check for Americans dating each other.
